FINAL VIDEO!

Final Book

We weren't quite sure of what style to have for the book so went and had a look. We all liked the book which shows the orange paper. We initially thought of red for the cover but felt it was a bit cliche and felt a more neutral light blue/green/grey would work better. We also wanted to foil emboss the cover, we all prefered a silver colours with a sans serif font.
We didn't choose red as we felt it was quite an impactful colour and that it may give the wrong first impression when picking up.
Picking a lighter neutral colour just felt better and introduces the contents nicer. Sans serif we felt worked again to give a softer first impression as serif fonts can be seen to be more regal and formal which wasn't the look we wanted.
Helen did the making of the book but I did the embossing as we both decided on the final colours.

Whilst doing the editing we went back to the idea of making a book/zine. I think we all had different idea of how we could make it.
I suggested making a hardcover book and then neatly laying out all our assets that we used for the stopmotion. I took inspiration from one of the books I saw in the curious exhibition where the curator michael leigh had collected a range of stamps and then stamped them into a hardback book (pictured above).
There were between 1-6 stamps on a page and it was all set out neatly. Which contradicts the whole mail art ethos but I feel like this style would lend itself well to letting each piece of work speak for itself.

Chris, Pat and Stella did most of the editing as it would've been too much if we were all doing it but we did all give input and when it came to my scene I helped make some of the sound by scrunching paper.
Some of the audio was found on the internet but a lot was made in the room with pat and stella recording, moving ice, room silence, paper ripping, taping on the table and other techniques were used to help make the sound effects for the animation.
The music and sound effects really made it come together and watching the editing process was really great. Some sections like my scene for example was too short but Chris was able to elongate it by adding some reverse techniques.

We all worked on different parts of the animation we tend to have two people for each scene so it wouldn't overcrowd. I help with the opening curtain scene as well as helen's scene and mine.
We unfortunately had some technical difficulties during the filming process due to have to use three different cameras due to them either being used or having broken. We did as best as we can to make it run smooth and are able to edit some of the errors out in post production.

This is a snapshot of how I want my scene to look, my plan is for "NO MAN NEEDED" to appear letter by letter as all the assets shuffle in from the outside and crowd around the quote, then the little stars and hearts will drop into places and each asset will wiggle out afterwards. Similar to my initial snapshot idea.
The assets you don't see below have been made by Stella and Helen I gave them and idea of what I wanted and this is what they came back with. I used my initial snapshot to give them a reference. They did an amazing job and did exactly what I envisioned.

CHRIS

CHRIS

CHRIS

I made a few russian dolls for Chris, Helen and I (images labeled with persons name).
Chris wanted a proud looking russian woman I tried to create this with a happy facial expression as well as traditional looking flowers and patterns.
Helens scene is about the woman questioning herself and is in the midway point of her thought process, she liked the idea of having question marks incorporated in someway as she feels the woman is questioning where she stands.
For myself I want to make a slightly modern russian dolls since I am the last scene which is when the woman realises she doesn't need a man to be fulfilled. I've made the doll have short hair and have given her an equality centre detail. I kept traditional flowers throughout to show that becoming independent doesn't mean she has to separate completely from her russian heritage.
I also have some extra russian dolls that I did on the process of making mine helen's and chris' dolls. I feel they could still be used in the zine/book we plan to make?
On the right are my other assets with a big theme on woman empowerment and independence, I feel "no man needed" is the woman realising that she can be independent and not have to confide to the social norms in Russia. This narrative shows her questioning herself and feel the subtle details of for example books for education, pussy hats for women's rights, money for making her own money and other things are ways that "no man needed" can be shown.

These are some image Chris showed me to get some ideas for how he wanted his Russian doll for his scene. His scene is part of the introduction which explain the definition for zamuzh which means "for a woman to marry. To be "of a man". He wants the doll to look proud like a traditional russian doll as many women in russia are lead to believe they should be at a man's beck and call. He wants to start the animation with a strong russian patriotism.

Why we chose our colours
We thought it best to choose colour backgrounds for each scene. I suggests ones similar to my initial sketch below. Reason being is I feel like a starting with a red is a good way to represent the power and strength russian portrays themselves to have.
I feel like transitioning from Bright Red - Candy Pink - Lavendar - Azure Blue - Tabriz Blue complements the thought process of the woman. Slowly changing colour to eventually get to blue which has connotations of wisdom, stability and independence fits well with how the woman's journey from thinking she's a proud Russian woman to realising she was made to feel like that and can now think for herself. Colours can have an impact on what people are think and I think we have chosen well.
So before taking the plunge to animate we thought it be best to do a rough animation to see if our overall idea would work. We all like the idea of the quote appearing whilst objects which relate to said quote come into the shot.
We are all happy with how it turned out and have been able to picture what it may look like and how we are going to animation the narrivative.

So this is how I roughly invision for my animation to look like - I want clear connotations of women empowerment, independence and individuality. The woman doesn't need a man as has come to the realisation she doesn't need a man to feel fulfilled so I feel these stamps and sketches speak with the quote for this scene.
I made some rough stamp ideas for me to make but also some of my sketches I have asked Helen and Stella to make better.
Helen and Chris have also asked me to make some russian dolls for them - some of my notes are above.
This is who has each scene.
Whilst chris was doing some research he found this amnesty international video about russia. Whilst its darker version of what we want to make it plays in a way we kind of wanted, we like the idea of having russian dolls throughout that have different expressions. The video is very powerful and hits on what it's really like in russia and I think it's important to know what is really going on and I this is what we want to come from our video but in a "softer" way.
We were also stuck for a title of the video and Chris found the word Zamuzh which means for a woman to mary. To be "of a man". It can also be seen as "behind a man" in the sense that a women works for the man and isn't equal. We all think this a good way to introduce the video the video as it really shows that a women's role is seen to please a man in woman culture. We then want to show the process of the women questioning what society has taught her and let her think for herself.

Narrative
We also ended up deciding on how we are going to from a proud russian woman who feels the need to marry a man to not this woman realising she doesn't need anyone. Above are some of ideas as to how we can develop we chose 5 base points so we can all have a quote each.
Are thinking is that we are all in charge of a quote each and we are in charge of what will be shown on each quote. This way it gives us all the opportunity to have a role in the animation process.
We did wonder whether this will mean there may not be a consistent style throughout the animation but our idea is to makes assets for each others scenes to help with that. Also the fact that mail art is the filter it can be a mix of all sorts. The collaboration factor to help each other and creating work really adds to the mail art movement.

We showed each other our ideas and I would say we all had similarities of how we wanted to make this animation. My idea of the ripping paper instead of envelopes was liked by everyone and then we all had crossovers of what we wanted to come on the screen for each section.
A mixture of stamps, postcards, paper rips, mixed media and more to come across the page was agreed.

Margaret Scrinkl is an animator and illustrator who mainly focus on paper cut outs. She makes very intricate illustrations from paper cut outs as well as making stop motion animations for big clients but also her self.
They are expertly made and look really professional, whilst they some of her animations may be tricky to make overall their simple style and minimal objects seems like it could be a good style that we can branch of off.
Above is a an example are a video of one of her animations and the the other are some still images. The clock is one that I was initially drawn to as it's animated with simple movements and then sparks up with little star. It seems like quite an achievable animation style that as a group could do - same goes for the ghost animation.
I showed the group this video as well as the examples below to give a sense of what I was thinking in my head as my storyboard isn't up to scratch. When I showed them they were able understand clearly.

These two examples were done by graphic designer and illustrator Eiko Ojala. These particular pieces were done for the Sunday Review part of The New York Times. In the article they are still images but these animations really bring them to life, the effect of different heights of paper is really effective as an animation but also a still images.
I chose these because I this could be a simple way to show depth in our stop motion. Looking at Ojala work it does however seem that whilst he uses paper that for the animations it is likely animated on computer. It may just be the case that it's all done on a computer and he can fake the paper effect well.
Nevertheless I felt these images work well for possible inspiration to show the rest of the group.

By coincidence I was able to find a project showing what I what I meant by the paper ripping. I want each layer to show a new colour and this is a good representation of how I had it in my head.
This project is a rebranding for a company (I think within the creative field that includes co-working) by a Paris Studio called Le Onzième Lieu - Direction artistique. They went through a whole process and created many assets for this company and there a real sense for consistency throughout the branding.
Next Steps
We had a meeting after having watched the documentary to work out how we wanted to do this. We concluded that animation should start somehow with with a proud russian woman and then have her thoughts (secrets) peel back as she comes to realise that she doesn't need a man to be happy in life.
Having a rough idea we thought it best for each of us to then brainstorm a storyboard to show how we could animate the narrative.
Over the weekend I researched styles I thought could work and ended up with the storyboard above. In my head I wanted to come up with a simple way to animation but that will have a nice effect. I thought a stop motion with paper involved would work, it lends itself to the mail art filter.
When speaking with the group we had spoken about envelopes representing russian dolls, what came to mind instead is that we could have different layers of paper and rip away paper each time so the hole gets smaller and smaller to tie in with our russian doll representation and secrets idea.
I then went on to search for paper animation so I could get ideas for my storyboard. My favorites are what are above...

I wanted to do a little more research into woman in russia so founda few articles saying different things. They were interesting reads and mostly helped to back up our points of women being oppressed in Russia.
There were different things said because of course not all women feel oppressed or are excited to get married and settle down as people's preferences are different. However I think it's important to note the pressure on women and there tends to be less freedom of choice compared to other countries globally on how women should act.
Pat showed us this foley artist video he had seen a few years ago. We had all spoken about how important we felt it was to add sounds effects in post production to make our anmation come together. This video outlines possible ways of how we could do it but is just to show that we are already thinking about the whole process of making a stop motion animation.
Whilst looking for some animation styles for out presentation I remember that one of my favourite short "film" uses a cool style of animation. I've referenced this piece in my work before as I think it's a great piece of work in terms of how the story is laid out and the style of it.
I felt like this could give us ideas for possible stop motion ideas...
We wanted to start looking at some animation styles. Pes was recommended to us by fern whilst we all really like it we all agreed that this wasn't the style we wanted to do it it considering our experience and timeframe for this to be completed.

Above are my notes on the Vice documentary states of undress: Russia.
Within the first few minutes of the programme I'm safe to speak for all of us that we had lots of information to help us choose a narrative for our sequence. It was quite clear that women are seen to be at men's beck and call and are seen less important than men.
We came to the conclusion of having different layers and the animation we make will start with a traditional russian woman (possibly just a perspective) and as layers are peeled back secrets will emerge of how this women really feels.
In terms of mediums this could come in different forms e.g. envelopes, paper, stamps, paint and lots more!
Our next steps was to pick a final narrative. We liked both of our ideas but felt that something to do with women in Russia would link better to and portray a stronger image for our theme.
Initial ideas were women's secrets which then evolved to us think Russian women's secrets. We had lots of ideas but were kind of stuck in a way to develop it as we all had different approaches. Chris and Stella spoke about a documentary made by vice which was on women in Russia. Chris had watched it and recommended we all did as a group to get some stronger ideas out of us.
Before watching we had the set idea that we want a "perfect" woman on the outside and then as you "open" up the doll/secrets you find out what is really going on.
We all agreed we want to choose a narrative before looking into how we will make this animation as well as considering different mediums.

Women's secrets was an idea thought we could using the secrets box. We started by sharing anonymous women secrets with each other.
We felt like it could have been a good idea but due to secrets being everything and anything we felt narrowing things down and making them seem important when we may have been mentioning difficult topics it may have not been suited.
Also refining it to russian women fits better with our russian doll theme!
The feedback we got was good but we were told to pick one idea. Fern liked the idea of exploring womanhood but did mention that it could be a difficult one to refine into a short animation.
Overall we were told our presentation was good and we set it up well. However it was too long and we didn't need to show as much research as we did and to just get to the ideas quicker.

For our idea presentation we need to work out how to narrow down a narrative as well as a style and mediums we want to you to create our animation.
Over the weekend we divided up work for each of us to collect our group information for the slide presentation we are doing.
We set out the presentation as above. We wanted to introduce our theme (Russian Dolls) and key points we found interesting and the same four filter (Curious Things Exhibition).
We liked the idea of the onion skin effect of Russian dolls and the whole idea of peeling back layers to represent secrets. Two different ways we thought we could go down is womanhood in Russia and peoples secrets. We go into more detail in the presentation. We couldn't set a single idea so we proposed two...
In terms of using the filter we dabbled with ideas of the animation being in the style of mixed media and possible envelopes within each other and just a lot of mixed media.
I added the information for explaining the curious things exhibition as well as GIFs showing different mediums and animation techniques.
As a group we had a look a different medium and techniques for the style. Since we were more focused on a narrative we didn't too much but I will go into more detail on techniques later.

We then decided to have a group meeting about how we want make our narrative. We individually thought of some ideas and then shared with each other. Above are some of our notes.
We all also agreed on making a stop motion animation as well as possibly making a zine of some sort to accompany it.

Russian Dolls
Stella and Helen went on to present their findings on Russian dolls. On the left are my notes. On the right is Helen's research.
It was clear that Russian dolls are a traditional part of Russian culture and may come in different forms but how traditionally they represent a Russian family.
Reasearch
Pat and Chris researched different areas of the exhibition/mail art movement. We decided that we would go away and research different sections so when we presented our information to the other half of the group we would have variety of information.
Chris looked more in to the history of mail stemming from Ray Johnson and how it started i the 1960s. He also looked into artistamps a little as well as other mediums used for mail art.
In summery what I presented to the rest of the group was that I found that the curious things exhibition is made up mail spanning over 50years. The whole idea is to be creative and do whatever you want. You sent mail along in a chain where it will eventually go back to the sender. Art is added to the letter on it's journey, it can also just be a call out to edit or add to an existing template. The whole point of mail art is that you can do whatever you want.
It had heavy ties with DADAism, as well as the fluxus movement. It about making things in whatever medium you like and creating communal art.

I also went to the library to do some further research. I didn't find a lot but I did find some cool stamp designs! ANNOTATEEEEE

I sifted through many websites to do with mail art movement I wanted to get an understanding fo the curious things exhibition and it's history as well as the way the mail art movement works. I delved mainly into the curators of the curious things exhibition to see what they do or have done in the past to do with the mail art movement. I also found lots of online forums to do with people from around the world setting up their own mail art trails. I found lots of different work from over a decade old to a couple of days ago.
Here are some further notes I have from audio dictation.
One of the curators of the exhibition curious things is Michael Lee, he started His collection of collecting mail art in the 60s when he’s in art school. He would send letters to fellow artist students around the UK and then would get them to add their own art to the letters. This is a form of artistamps which are pieces of artwork that look like stamps, but aren’t actually valid to pay for the sending of the letter. The sort of things he would send to his friends would be rubber stamping, crude drawings as well as collages.
At the time Ray Johnson an American artist had started the New York correspondence school which is a “school” Which he built to exchange gifts through the mail system to Johnson’s friends and acquaintances. In the 1980s Lee’s Mealough had grown quite significantly and he discovered the mail art network through an exhibition at the Greenwich Theatre gallery. He was surprised to find out that it was quite a big thing going on at the time and through the system he met Hazel Jones.
Hazel Jones and Michael of the creators of the curious things exhibition and have been working together collecting art since the 1983. When they met they were able to combine their archive of things sent through the mail and add to their collection.
Michael set up a company called A1 wastepaper co. This started so it could be used as a vehicle for the mail art activity from 1980 onwards. Michael continues to work doing Mellor as well as collagen quite frequently. He seems to be part of many blogs and forums on the mail art community worldwide where he will quite frequently add comments to some forms.
The Mellor movement is heavily or seems to be heavily inspired by the DADA movement as well as crossing into surrealism. Michael Lee Hazel Jones and Charlie Holt are trio who have been created to be inspired by the side movements as well as liking Monty Python and the art of collecting.
Michael and Hazel seem to have a couple of blocks where they are Carrying on posting a collage work as well as collection work.
From reading one of the exhibition catalogues from a curious things exhibition previously Curated by Michael and Hazel is clear that this artist movement isn’t about making money and it isn’t about commercialism and trying to get things that will sell. Is trying to build a community that can help build up our work to everyone who wants to be a part of it Can add their own spin to it. That’s what’s so great about this is because anyone can join anyone can do artist dancing anywhere that they would like and people are there in touch in style to each piece it’s a community creative lead way of working.
Mail art rules are non-existent however there are some guidelines. There should be no entry fee charged Ashby Nigeria’s for the work which is Submitted all work which is submitted should be shown and all participants should receive some form of documentation as well as all the work is kept in archive person organising the show. How that doesn’t stop people from recycling in resending everything because this part of the matter is that you want to send things on things may come back things may not come back.
Reading about how how it works that Michael went percent of 100 letters and with instructions of what C max need something to then finally after being sent from one person to another get back sometimes you get 50 bucks more a bit less but he’s always come back with something which travelled quite far.
I like the socialist approach to the mall art collection I like her I want to be part of it and it isn’t down to Nigeria is as to whether you are going to be shown and no one is going to judge what are you do you can add your own style and it’s nice that before your art is sample shown or collected it goes around people you have this change then this chain of letters become a whole family of work.
There is so much free reign how my a lot can work and how artists work I can be whatever you want and there are so many ways that it can be turned out as acuisine stamps and posted letters today anything you can dream of
Leigh co curated the exhibition with Hazel Jones, Who he met in the 1980s through the mail art movement they went on to start projects together. Their collection spans over many countries and styles.

As with my notes below it is prevalent that the mail art movement is very mixed media based. There's so much work that has gone into the mail art exhibition the ethos of the whole thing I thing is great. They want to scratch the whole middle man of the artwork where art that is created is a collaborative process and you never know what you are going to get back when sending out the mail.
No Rules: There are no mail art rules

We thought it would be best to go see what the mail art exhibition was about. We wrote down any themes/observations we could think of as well as taking many photos.
We split into two groups to research our filter/theme.
Chris, Pat and I will be researching the Mail Art exhibition that is currently at the library.
Stella and Helen will be researching Russian dolls.

What's funny is every time I see this video I click play and the rabbit hole that is procrastination begins. I really like the style of this video the animation style is really nice and I like how it varies a little but each scene merges together really well. The colours and composition work nicely.
